WHAT ARE CORTICOSTEROIDS?

Corticosteroids are strong anti-inflammatory drugs.  Cortisone is the most well-known drug that belongs to this family of corticosteroid medications.  Local injection maximises the concentration at the site of injury and minimises the risk of systemic side effects.

The goal of corticosteroid injections is to reduce pain and inflammation enough to allow a strengthening program to commence. They are a bridge to relieve symptoms while the underlying cause of the problem is addressed.

We do know that corticosteroids can cause tissue breakdown, including cartilage, so it is important to discuss all risks and benefits with your doctor.
